Full and Partial Dentures
You may find yourself missing teeth for a variety of reasons. Sometimes it is a result of injury, other times it is due to gum disease, tooth decay or genetics. Not only are missing teeth unsightly, they can also create serious health problems. Missing teeth can cause jaw problems, hinder one’s ability to eat, make it difficult to speak, and cause future problems with remaining teeth. Dentures are often the best option for patients to replace missing teeth and continue to live a normal life.
Types of Dentures
Depending on the specifics for your teeth and mouth, there is a range of denture options available including:
- Full Dentures – These are used when all or most of the teeth are missing. They allow individuals to continue to live full lives and give them the courage to smile. Typically, the patient will be fitted with immediate dentures when the teeth are being extracted. These dentures will arrive the same day so the individual does not need to worry about living without teeth. When the original dentures are replaced, it may take a few visits for Dr. Schumann to ensure that they fit right and suction to the gums the way they are supposed to for maximum comfort.
- Partial Dentures – Partials are used when the patient is missing several teeth in a row. These dentures will attach to the teeth surrounding them to keep the replacement teeth in place. One common attachment option involves small metal clasps that will be used to hook around the surrounding teeth. The clasps are designed to be as small and discreet as possible. Another option is to attach the denture with crowns fitted to the teeth surrounding an open area.
- Cu-Sil Dentures – These are used when the patient is missing many teeth, but still has a few natural teeth left. These dentures are custom made and specially designed to allow the natural teeth to fit through the denture and function normally. Many patients find them secure and comfortable. They can also be an excellent way for patients to postpone going from a partial denture to a full denture.
- Implants Or Implant Dentures – Implant dentures are an option when there is enough bone to help hold the implant in place. During this procedure, implants are used to anchor the replacement teeth to the bone in the jaw. Candidates for this option often prefer it because of the increased comfort, more natural fit and excellent support.
