Preventative Dental Treatments
It is recommended that patients with healthy gums have a professional dental cleaning at least two times per year. If you suffer from gum disease, you may need to go for a professional cleaning more frequently. During this cleaning appointment, a hygienist will remove the tartar and plaque from your teeth as well as thoroughly brush and floss your teeth. Dr. Schumann will also examine your teeth, look for signs of gum disease, and may recommend additional treatments like those listed below:
- Fluoride treatments are especially important for developing children. Starting at ages 6 months, minor patients should have additional fluoride treatments until they reach the age of 16 years old. Treatments typically consist of applying fluoride gel or paste to the teeth for several minutes. This helps to prevent tooth decay and strengthen youthful teeth. NOTE: Many adults can benefit from professional fluoride treatments as well.
- Bruxism is the condition of grinding your teeth. If you suffer from bruxism, Dr. Schumann can fit you with a mouth guard to help protect your teeth and minimize the side effects of grinding. The mouth guard is also an excellent intervention to prevent you from grinding your teeth at night. This can spare you cavities, fillings, crowns and sealant as well as reduce ill effects such as the number of headaches you have throughout the day.
- If you are an athlete, Dr. Schumann can fit you with an Under Armour mouth guard to protect your teeth while you enjoy your favorite sport. The various types of mouth guards that are offered at Grove City Dental include stock mouth protectors, bite mouth protectors and custom mouth protectors. Depending on your needs, Dr. Schumann will recommend a mouth guard that will provide the best protection for your teeth.
- Sealants can be placed on the chewing surfaces of your teeth in order to help protect them from tooth decay. Dr. Schumann typically recommends that children have dental sealants applied at the time their permanent molars arrive. This protects them from getting cavities throughout their adolescence.
