Sports Participation Claims 5 Million Teeth Per Year – Get Your Student Athlete Outfitted with an ArmourBide Mouth Guard

August is right around the corner, and that means back to school for kids and teens nationwide. If yours participates in school sports, take note – upward of 39 percent of all dental injuries reported each year are sports-related, according to statistics published in the Journal of the American Dental Association.

JAMA research reveals that more than 5 million teeth are avulsed (knocked out) each year and many of these incidents occur during sports activities. Not surprisingly, this happens to males at twice the rate it does to females, likely because boys are more apt to compete in contact sports than are females.

To help curb the problem, the National Federation of State High School Associations mandate the use of mouth guards for four of the most high-contact sports – football, lacrosse, field hockey and ice hockey. Plus, most high school and collegiate sports programs require student athletes to wear mouth guards when participating in other sports including basketball, baseball, softball and wrestling – and with good reason. Studies show basketball has the highest rate of injury for both male and female athletes, thanks to speed and close contact.

Dentists and officials with the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry recommend all children and youth participating in organized sports, and student athletes of any age participating in the following sports wear protective mouth guards:

  • Acrobatics
  • Basketball
  • Bicycling
  • Boxing
  • Equestrian events
